“The Waist Belay”

Garry Reiss uses an old-fashioned waist belay technique after the team decides it's time to turnaround due to signs of thunderstorm clouds in the distance. The descend is just as an important part of a mountain expeditions as the initial ascent. Despite being left out of many eloquent tales of alpine adventures, it is the descend that often poses the greatest risks to climbers: forgetfulness and poor judgment associated with fatigue, risk of afternoon thunderstorms and high winds, inability to set or execute a realistic turnaround time - can all lead to life threatening results.
